Beloved sugilite's name honors the man who first noted it, Japanese petrologist Professor Ken-ichi Sugi from the Imperial University in Kyushu. He found sugilite on the Iwagi islet of Japan. This exquisite mineral was also found in the Wessels Mine in South Africa in 1979. The known reserves from this mine are spent. Sugilite has also been mined in India, Italy, Australia and Canada.
Sugilite is a cyclosilicate mineral with a similar chemical structure to tourmaline and aquamarine. The mineral characteristics of high-quality sugilite include a rich purple color, exhibiting natural gradients or wavy lines and a somewhat glassy, luminous quality. Inclusions are expected in genuine sugilite too. Healing energies are associated with sugilite said to encourage forgiveness and releasing those bound by resentment.
Jovanna Poblano's Dragonfly necklace dazzles the senses with very high quality sugilite cabochons caressed by tiny gold seed beads, intricately hand-beaded to a soft sueded leather backing. Complimenting stichtite and glowing rose quartz beads join the airy water creature on an approximately 19" long museum-quality necklace. The ethereal dragonfly station itself is about 6" long including lovely beaded trail and 4 1/4" wide. Signed by the artist.
