In earlier times, Zuni women would gather water using a large pottery jar called an olla which was skillfully balanced on the head as they returned home from the Zuni river. The pottery jars would also be used to transport important things like cornmeal. Kateri Quandelacy Sanchez's refreshing serpentine Corn-Maiden holds a carved pottery jar filled with crushed turquoise to represent life-giving water. She looks to the heavens to offer thanks for the bounty. Facial features have been etched into iridescent gold lip shell and filled with jet paste. Incised star elements and many lovely alunite pieces enrich her blanket. About 1 3/4" tall, 1 1/4" wide and 3/4" deep.
