Robert Michael Weahkee's late grandmother Edna Leki taught him to carve his first serpent out of deer antler. She was probably the first female fetish carver at Zuni. The Weahkee family is among the oldest carving families. The earliest recorded Weahkee carver was Teddy Weahkee who worked with noted Zuni dealer C.G. Wallace. Robert's father was Anderson Weahkee. Anderson's mother was Edna Leki and Edna's father was Teddy Weahkee. Created from burnished antler is an incised tufted Owl sporting a cozy winter scarf. Eyes are from jet in turquoise. About 3 1/4" tall, 2 5/8" wide and 1 3/8" deep by Robert. Please click here to read more about him as our featured Artist Spotlight guest.
