Maxx Laate comes from the greater Laate family of carvers. Together with his brother Pernell Laate (d), they began carving in the mid-1980s. At that time they made their own tools but later used electric equipment, as many carvers do today. They would often visit wildlife magazines to refine the details in their artwork. Maxx's Eagle (or Hawk) is carved from amber which is a hardened resin from ancient trees that fossilized over millennia. Plumage and beak details are even more lovely because of the golden warm color inherent to the amber specimen. Excellent vision is through eyes from inlaid turquoise. About 1 3/4" tall, 1" wide and 5/8" deep.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this eagle fetish will go to the Zuni Eagle Sanctuary.
