The tradition of Zuni pottery-making has been practiced for more than a thousand years resulting in both functional and ceremonial vessels. Noted potter Carlos Laate has hand-coiled a traditional Deer In His House small pottery. He says "When I go to harvest the clay, I take some food offerings, some cornmeal offerings, and do a little bit of praying to Mother Earth asking a little bit of her skin to work with. I only take what I need." Gentle deer with heartlines or breath paths walk among perhaps raincloud motifs or abstracted plant designs. Materials utilized are handmade brushes, natural clay, yucca plant and mineral pigments. Dimensions are a charming and approximate 2 7/8" tall and 3 1/2" in diameter. Signed by the artist.
