Interestingly, shrews are not a rodent like a mouse but a member of an ancient Mammalian order Insectivora. These beneficial creatures have super sensitive whiskers known as vibrissae that help them hunt by touch and smell. They benefit farmers by consuming many crop-destroying pests. Nelson Yatsattie's well-polished Picasso marble shrew (or perhaps a Mole) has a nice long segmented tail and precious eyes from turquoise inlays. About 2 1/2" long, 1 3/8" wide and 1" tall. A specialized scent sensor on the tip of a Mole's nose helps locate prey. They work year-round tunneling and hunting for food favorites like earthworms. During the winter season, they will tunnel down deep below the frost line. For the Zuni Pueblo people a mole is the Guardian of Mother Earth, a protective and hunting animal of the underground.
