Some Indigenous ones value the matrix within turquoise as a representation of Mother Earth. The turquoise itself is like a connection to the sky. Matrix is the host rock that turquoise forms with as seen in Abby Panteah's feel-good Bear. The darker parts of matrix create unique patterns adding distinct character that can be as beautiful as the turquoise itself. In fact, some collectors seek unique matrix patterns and they can be quite valuable. Touches of perhaps hematite are visible in this roughly 2 3/8" long, 1 3/8" wide and 1" tall carving that fits nicely in hand. Eyes and a heartline or breath path are from turquoise inlays by Clayton Panteah.
