For thousands of years, Indigenous cultures around the North Pacific maintained sustainable fishing harvests by using in-river fishing tools like the Heiltsuk Nation’s traditional style fishing weirs or the Nisga’a Nation's fish wheels. Native salmon management had been more than a primary food source but rather a deep respect and reciprocity for water creatures who are woven into ancient stories, family structures and ceremonial doings. Upon colonization by Europeans, these traditional fisheries and systems were suppressed and even outlawed because of commercial fishing interests. Indigenous co-governance to salmon management is critical to the healing of sacred water sources and beneficial fish.
Peter Sohappy's little fish has been carved and etched from found stone, accented with soft sueded leather and a turquoise bead. The fish itself is about 1 3/4" long, 7/8" wide and 1/4" thick. The leather accent is about 1 3/4" long. A lovely leather pouch by Moon Bags compliments the carving beautifully. The pouch is roughly 2 1/2" long and 1 3/4" wide. A wonderful 2-piece set.
