Indigenous archeologists and scholars say the field of archaeology is outdated in how the remains of animals such as Horses and Bison are treated. Often they are just tossed in boxes or plastic bags with little care or even cushioning. Native Peoples view animals through spiritual eyes regarding them as relatives continuing to honor them even when they die. They are urging museums across the country to take a more respectful approach to how animal remains are handled. Cultural humility is a new insight researchers are embracing by listening to Indigenous groups and rethinking how they care for animal remains in processes such as cataloging, storage and display. Daphne and Leland Boone's cherishable pony from onyx is about 3 1/4" long, 5/8" wide and 2 1/8" tall. Eyes are from sky-blue turquoise inlays. A colorful turquoise inlay is seen on the tail.
