For the A:Shiwi (The People), a rich tradition of pottery-making has been practiced for more than a thousand years to produce both functional and ceremonial vessels. By the middle of the last century however, this art form was fairly dormant having given way to jewelry-making, the main support of the Zuni economy. Over the last fifty years, pottery-making has been revived through ceramics classes at Zuni High School and some dedicated instructors such as Daisy Hooee Nampeyo, Jennie Laate and Josephine Nahohai. Noreen Simplicio has been making pottery for over 35 years having been taught by Jennie Laate and Angelina Medina back then. Zuni designs include the Deer In His House and Rainbird motifs as expressed in Noreen's natural clay and pigments pottery. These dazzling designs including a stunning rosette capture the eye in this approximately 6" long, 6" wide and 5 1/4" tall handmade piece. Signed by the artist.
