Soapstone has been used by Indigenous Peoples throughout the Western Hemisphere to create ceremonial objects, pipes and animal carvings among other things. Many artists love working with soapstone which is a type of metamorphic rock, because of its workable dense surface and soapy sort of texture. It is a popular choice for beginnining and advanced carvers. We're in love with Sherdine Tsatte's bushytail (
Fox,
Wolf or
Coyote) sculpted from a rich soapstone to a size of approximately 3" long, 1" wide and 1 1/2" tall. The sweetest expression is conveyed through turquoise inlaid eyes. A lovely pipestone point offering bundle is attached. Sherdine is the mother of Loren Tsalabutie who is following in his late father Jeffery Tsalabutie's carving footsteps.
