Water creatures represent the sentience of nature and ecological accountability for many Indigenous cultures around Mother Earth. Sabawaelnu or Water People are sacred to First Nation Mi'kmaq Peoples. Aboriginal Peoples of Arnhem Land in Australia believe in fresh water spirits known as asngal-kunburriyaymi or Yawk Yawk possessing upper bodies of a woman and fish-like tails. In New Zealand, Māori hold the Marakihau as a powerful sea-beings with human and fish-like bodies. Rochelle Quam's water spirit is full of feminine strength that flows like the currents, while the lovely lepidolite specimen calls to mind her sparkling watery home.
