Sea otters and shellfish have coexisted with Indigenous Coastal societies for thousands of years. Because of the fur trade that started in the 1700's and other non-Native interference, sea otter and other animal populations have suffered. Nowadays, conventional science is realizing that incorporating Indigenous science and knowledge aides in restoring marine landscapes. Stevan Natachu's serpentine otter floats with its adorable pup from pink mussel shell. Eyes are from turquoise inlays and a mosaic tail is overlaid with jet, mother-of-pearl, turquoise and spiny oyster shell. About 3 5/8" long, 5/8" wide and 7/8" tall.
