Claudia Peina descends from the late George Cheechee Haloo family of noted Zuni Pueblo artists. Her late uncle Miguel Haloo began carving in the 1970's and taught many family members the traditional art. Claudia's Maiden has been artfully sculpted from antler. Etched whorls of hair signify she hasn't had a baby but has cared for many. Songs of the ancestors are sung through a coral mouth, while jet-filled eyes are heartfelt. An inlaid red coral and turquoise necklace is complimented by the etched evergreen branches on her shawl. Many pen shell, red coral and turquoise pieces add color to this roughly 2 1/4" tall, 1 1/4" wide and 7/8" deep gorgeous carving.
