Many Pueblo stories include parrots or macaws. They symbolize the sun and are also associated with summer and salt gathering among other reasons. In the Zuni way, many birds are believed to carry prayers to the sky and clouds, asking for blessings and rainfall. Exotic parrots have been part of North American Indigenous cultures due to the advanced and extensive trade system that existed way before Europeans colonizers arrived on the continent. Stevan Natachu's landing parrot has been carved from watermelon serpentine with overlaid tail feathers from turquoise, jet and spiny oyster shell. A wonderful jet beak has turquoise inlays, as do the eyes. Permanently attached to a base of jet, all together measurements are about 2 1/4" tall, 5/8" wide and 2" long.
