The tradition of Zuni pottery has been practiced for more than a thousand years in the making of both functional and ceremonial vessels. Noted potter Carlos Laate said "When I go to harvest the clay, I take some food offerings, some cornmeal offerings, and do a little bit of praying to Mother Earth asking a little bit of her skin to work with. I only take what I need." Materials utilized in his original pottery works are handmade brushes, natural clay, yucca plant and mineral pigments. His hand-coiled wedding vase is painted with the traditional Deer In His House motif, stunning rosettes and Zuni Rainbird designs.
