An ancient art form from Mother Earth is that of ammolites. During the Devonian to the Cretaceous periods, the right conditions had to be in place for an ammonoid mollusk to fossilize as an ammonite. As the ancient seas receded, the ammonoids were buried by preserving layers of bentonite sediment. A very thin sheet of material on the surface of the creature's shell opalized and those stunning rare areas are called ammolite.

Kateri Quandelacy Sanchez's soothing Corn-Maidens are carved from an ammolite fossil with gorgeous opalized areas. They are accompanied by a Zuni Sunface element from turquoise, pipestone and gold lip shell, representing the elements in balance. The Corn Maiden's peaceful faces are from overlaid gold lip shell etched and filled with jet paste. Turquoise and pipestone inlays adorn them. Long etched hair and shawl fringe are lovingly attended to. Dimensions of this museum-quality piece are about 5 1/2" long, 1 1/2" wide and 6 1/4" tall.
