Education is critical in raising awareness in protecting magnificent gorillas and other great apes. They have suffered severe population declines because of poaching, logging, habitat loss, mining, political conflicts, the pet trade, exposure to disease and the effects of climate change. Gorillas possess great upper body strength with arms longer and more muscular than their legs. They are larger than any other living primate. Crucial in spreading biodiversity, powerfully intelligent gorillas wander large territories, depositing seeds from the fruits and plants they eat.
Herbert Halate's gorilla has been carved from naturally fragrant cedar. He started carving in 1972 having learned by observing his father Leonard Halate after school. Gentle eyes are from turquoise inlays while little nostrils are drilled. Approximately 4 1/2" tall, 2 3/8" wide and 1 5/8" deep.
