Zuni artist Dee Edaakie was influenced by his uncle carving great Gibbs Othole. He began a career by sanding rough stones in his uncle's studio. Prior to that he studied painting using pencils and watercolors to create landscapes and animals. Symbolizing potential, Corn-Maiden emerges from corn with etched kernels on her body. Leaf blades are incised. Dee's Corn Maiden is carved from stichtite adorned with coral and turquoise inlays. Facial features are from iridescent abalone, pen shell and pink mussel shell. Approximately 1 3/4" tall, 1 1/4" wide and 3/4" deep.
