Camilio Martinez descends from the greater Laate family of Zuni artists. His father is Charles Martinez Sr., and his brother is Charles Martinez Jr., both wonderful carvers.
Wasps are important in keeping garden and crop pests under control, as they capture and consume many harmful insects. We're loving Camilio's marble wasp with mother-of-pearl wings, that are incised and darkened with jet paste. This beneficial insect also has segmented antennae and a little stinger of mother-of-pearl. A Picasso marble toadstool is the perfect and permanent resting spot for this winged creature. Approximately 2 1/2" tall, 2" wide and 2 1/4" deep.
This graceful little pueblo maiden by Ray Tsalate is carved from antler, patiently standing bare footed on a base of marble. She wears a mother of pearl shell feather in her finely carved hair, swept up into two little buns, plus a fine necklace of inlaid red coral with a turquoise center piece. Her inlaid eyes of brown pen shell and the red coral mouth convey a serene reverence. The sleeves of her dress are decorated with Dragonflies darkened with jet paste while the bottom is accented with an inlaid design turquoise, red coral and lines filled with pipestone paste. This beautiful carving measures about 1 1/8" wide by 1" deep and stands at 3" tall including the base.
