Carved from Purisima fossil stone, this gorgeous Turtle by Daryl Shack, Sr., is covered in the remains of mollusks, gastropods, bivalves and other marine life from ages long past. Fossils communicate and share secrets from Mother Earth's history helping us understand the secrets of our own time. The fossil stone comes from the Purisima Formation in California and contains fossilized evidence of the ocean floor from the late Miocene to the late Pliocene epochs. When cut into and carved by talented Zuni artists like Daryl, the edges of those fossils begin to look like the scribblings of an ancient language. The cultured opal-eyed reptile is covered in beautiful fragments. By examining these fossils we see familiar shapes reminding us that the past is not as far away as it feels. About 2 7/8" long, 2" wide and 1 1/8" tall.
