Called hokdidasha in the Zuni language, Mountain-lion are one of the largest wild cats native to the Americas. With a native range spanning from the Canadian Territory of Yukon, British Columbia down into the southern Andes Mountains in Patagonia, mountain lions are a regular occurrence in most alpine towns. Historically their range extended out into the eastern side of North America as well but due to intensive hunting during European colonization and the expansion of human settlement, they have since become locally extinct on that side of the continent save for the isolated Florida panther subpopulation. The Florida panther population is critically endangered and it’s estimated only 20 individuals are still alive in the wild.
