Indigenous Peoples of North America like those of the Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee use the back of a turtle's shell as a lunar calendar. Most turtle shells have 13 large scutes like the 13 phases of the moon and changing seasons. If you count the smaller scutes that circle the shell you'll find 28, just like the 28 days between full moons. Celebrate the wondrous design of a Turtle's shell in Brian Yatsattie's upright reptile. Sweet little eyes are from jet inlays while both the carapace and plastron are gorgeously incised. Measurements are approximately 2 3/8" tall, 1 1/8" wide and 1 5/8" deep, creatively carved from verdant ricolite.
