Brandon Phillips started carving dinosaurs when he was 13 years old but has been carving since he was just 10. His mother is Zuni artist Marvelita Phillips. She's renowned for carved animal necklaces. Brandon's grandfather was noted carver and jeweler Leonard Halate who started in the 1940's. Leonard carved dinosaurs too. Brandon's uncle is carver Herbert Halate. Sculpted from marble, a turquoise-eyed triceratops dinosaur is about 2 5/8" long, 1 1/4" wide and 1 3/4" tall. Its magnificent frill is from rich pipestone and pointy horns are from turquoise. Soft cross-hatching represents reptilian skin. Triceratops lived during the late Cretaceous Period.
