Anthony Lovato is a fourth-generation jeweler from Kewa Pueblo who descends from mother and noted artist Mary Coriz Lovato and grandfather Leo Coriz. He's passionate about language revitalization through education and the healing power of art. The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture in Santa Fe is honoring him with the 2023 Living Treasure award and an exhibition called "Down Home".
Anthony graduated from Bernalillo High School then went on to study metalwork at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. He's famous for his tufa cast jewelry. The Hopi Tribe's reservation in Arizona is where he harvests the tufa sandstone. Back in his studio, a hand saw is used to slice the tufa into manageable portions. He then meticulously carves one of a kind designs into the sandstone. Molten silver is then poured into the block and cools later.
Anthony started creating what he refers to as Spirit pendants in 1990. His magnificent Horse Spirit pin/pendant is made with vibrant Royston turquoise and tufa cast sterling silver. He's an avid horseman, incorporating a love and appreciation of powerful equines to his stunning jewelry works. Signed by the artist, measurements are about 4 1/4" long and 1 1/2" wide.
