A  Zuni Maiden joyfully grinds Corn in time with all her sisters, daughters, and aunties to the rhythm of the drums as the Pueblo prepares for the year a head. Zunis and other Indigenous societies are farmers growing corn as a sustenance crop. Corn is called the mother because it’s cultivated from Mother Earth and sustains the people. Traditionally corn is acknowledged as a gift and a blessing from the Creator and is often used in prayer and ceremony.

Carved from antler by Claudia Peina this traditional Zuni maiden wears her hair in whorls on the sides of her head, accented with inlaid turquoise. She wears a gorgeous turquoise necklace. Her eyes are inlaid jet, her mouth a dot of red coral. About 4 1/4" tall, 1 3/4" wide and 1 1/4" deep.
