Zunis and other Indigenous societies were farmers growing corn as a sustenance crop. Planted and harvested today, corn is called "the mother" because it’s cultivated from “Mother Earth”. The traditional way corn is used acknowledges it as a gift and blessing from the Creator. Many pueblo cultures give Corn Dances. Cheryl Beyuka's gold lip shell Corn-Maiden has etched corn on her body and she wears a turquoise, coral and jet studded shawl. Facial features are from jet paste and a coral inlay. Presented on a base of crushed turquoise to represent water and marble, all together measurements are about 2" tall, 2 3/4" wide and 1 1/2" deep.
