The ancient Pueblo of Hawikuh located about 12 miles southwest of Zuni Pueblo was excavated from about 1917 to 1923. The late iconic artist Leekya Deyuse worked as an excavator observing the old carvings being unearthed. This stirred in him a desire to carve in a similar way as his ancestors. His fetish necklaces, human figurines and plant forms are very popular. Inspired by his grandfather, Hayes Leekya's latest offering is a 2-piece set of effigies or figurines carved from local Zuni travertine. The adorable Zuni woman is about 2 1/2" tall, 1 1/2" wide and 1 3/4" deep, while the sweet man is approximately 2 3/8" tall, 1 1/2" wide and 1" deep. Eyes are from pen shell inlays. Don't miss this charming collectible pairing.
