The origins of Sumō wrestling date back thousands of years in Japan. Sumō wrestling started as a Shinto ritual to please the gods so a good harvest season would ensue. Loren Tsalabutie's upright Bear is positioned like a great Sumō wrestler ready for full contact. An upright bear is considered healing and demonstrating great strength in Zuni worldview. Eyes are from turquoise inlays and an offering necklace has red coral and lapis lazuli beads. About 2" tall, 1 3/4" wide and 1 1/2" deep, smoothly sculpted from bright atlantisite.
