By Wilson Romero, Cochiti-Dine

Animal: Bear, Material: Found Rhyolite
This offering is sold.

Typically found stone carvings are a bit hard to identify due to the rough and mostly original condition of the stone. This beautiful bear, by Wilson Romero, is one of a few exceptions. The fabulous colors and patterns in the stone clearly announces itself as a  rhyolite, a type of volcanic stone. The Cochiti Pueblo and surrounding areas, where Wilson lives and where he found this stone, were once a hotbed of ancient volcanic activity. The stone is actually small silica glass particles fused together by heat and compression, swirling colors come from differing densities influenced and colored by their mineral composition. The bands of red are thanks to the presence of iron. Wilson Romero's gorgeous found rhyolite Bear measures about 4 1/2" long, 1 1/2" wide by 2 1/2" tall.
