For 28 years renowned Zuni potter Carlos Laate has delighted all with handmade clay works. He learned the ancient art from his Grandmother who taught him "not play with clay because it’s part of the Earth and you can’t play with Mother Earth unless you are really going to be trying to learn how to work with clay." Before harvesting the local clay, he always makes an offering of food and cornmeal to Mother Earth, praying and thanking her for "a little bit of her skin to work with". He told us he only takes what he needs.

We're adoring Carlos' robust Owl friend with scalloped plumage and a wide-eyed expression reflective of the fact that an owl can see what others cannot. In Zuni many homes have a pottery Night Grandfather Owl watching over them. About 5" tall, 4 1/2" wide and 3 1/2" deep, from natural clay and pigments. Signed by the artist.
