Many Pueblo stories include parrots or macaws. They symbolize the sun and are associated with summer and salt gathering among other reasons. In the Zuni way, many birds are believed to carry prayers to the sky and clouds, asking for blessings and rainfall. Exotic parrots have been part of North American Indigenous cultures due to the advanced and extensive trade system that existed way before European colonizers arrived on the continent. Cameron Kalestewa's turquoise-eyed parrot is perched on a wonderful serpentine point with fresh peridot and hematite beads. The serpentine bird's beak is a wonderful combination of lapis and mother-of-pearl. Dimensions in their entirety are about 2 1/4" long, 1" wide and 1 1/8" deep.
