White animals are a rarity in creation revered by many Indigenous cultures. Polar bears are not a traditionally carved animal for the A:Shiwi (Zuni) but they are greatly respected especially by Inuit Peoples. In the Zuni way, white Bears are considered to have extra healing qualities. Carved from one piece of Ojo rock, Fred Bowannie, Jr.'s mother polar bear and little cub share a beautiful moment in time. Ojo rock is found on the Zuni Reservation near Ojo Caliente. It is an exquisite argillaceous mineral with clay-like ingredients. He hikes ancestral lands for wonderful stones. Endearing facial features are from pen shell inlays. About 5" tall, 3" wide and 2 7/8" deep.
