Once abundant, conservation groups across North America are bringing the Bison back from the edge of extinction. On May 9, 2016 President Obama signed the "National Bison Legacy Act" into law, officially making the American bison the national mammal of the United States. In January of this year President Biden announced the Bison Project:  Bison are a keystone species that play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of diverse landscapes, while also supporting economic development and Indigenous food sovereignty and security. The Bison Project will focus on habitat restoration, genetic diversity preservation, and the expansion of bison populations in collaboration with Indigenous communities utilizing Indigenous Knowledge.
