Zuni Pueblo artist Donovan Laiwakete is one of six brothers, five of whom are carvers. He's known for making dynamic animals with exquisitely inlaid heartlines, often in multiples. A heartline represents the breath path starting at the mouth area of a creature leading to the heart region. Carved from a fabulous portion of picture jasper is a Medicine-Bear meticulously inlaid with a turquoise, pipestone, mother-of-pearl, rainbow calsilica and spiny oyster shell heartline, in a spectacular kaleidoscopic-like effect. The picture jasper is uniquely beautiful in its formation. Eyes are from turquoise eyes. Dimensions of this stunning carving are approximately 2 3/4" long, 1/2" wide and 2 3/8" tall.
