The high rugged mountains of Northern New Mexico are home to Bear Root or osha, a traditional healing plant from the parsley family. Indigenous science includes herbalism, an ancient knowledge learned through respectful observation of revered wildlife. Brother Bear's emergence from winter's torpor includes consuming and rolling in roots from the beneficial osha plant. Zuni fetish carvings with rounded backs are meant to honor bears who lead by example even in healing ways. Carved from heavenly rainbow fluorite, Kenric Laiwakete's Medicine-Bear forages on nutritious roots. Eyes and a heartline or breath path are from turquoise inlays.
