Bison (or buffalo) are especially important to the Plains Indigenous tribes whose main sustenance once depended on the vast herds. The entire bison body was used, nothing was wasted. Prayers of appreciation were offered for the abundance they provided. Bison continue to be a keystone species, their strong hooves aerate the soil cultivating seeds important to the ecosystem.
