For more than 40 years, self-taught artist Adrian Leon has been carving exquisite katsina dolls teaching a few others along the way. He says katsina dolls "represent everything in the universe" He also shared that "every time I sell these dolls I say a prayer that wherever they go, let them heal whoever has problems, or let their town become peaceful and gain what they need because they do have strong power." His latest woodwork is a miniature Hopi Greasy Katsina doll carved from cottonwood and painted with colorful acrylics. If caught by Greasy Katsina during a traditional foot race, grease will be smeared on the opponent. Other nice additions to this small carving include feathers, yarn, pipe cleaner and perhaps cheesecloth. About 2 1/2" tall, 1 1/4" wide and 1 1/8" deep, measurements include the base. Signed by the artist.
