Hopi Morning Singers used to appear in pairs on the rooftops, singing songs to wake the sleeping Hopi Pueblo villagers. They took the lead in the singing and dancing with other katsinas during the day. They appear at the Powamu or Bean Planting Ceremony and stand in a set to one side of the procession. Sometimes they sing as they hold spruce trees and ring their bells. Adrian Leon's "Hopi Early Morning Singer" Katsina doll is a miniature size at about 2 1/2" tall, 1 1/2" wide and 1" deep. Skillfully detailed cottonwood has vibrant acrylic paints, chicken feathers, green pipe cleaners representing pine boughs, embroidery thread, leather and cloth additions.
