Peacocks are colorful pheasants in the peafowl family. They were designated as the national bird of India in 1963. Known as mayura in Sanskrit, peacocks hold an honored place often depicted in temple art, mythology, poetry, music and traditions. Gilbert Bowannie's wonderful pipestone bird displays a dazzling train with eye spots from turquoise and jet paste. A male peacock spreads his tail feathers to display a spectacular fan of blue and green. Each feather hosts an eye-like shape giving the illusion of large penetrating eyes. Not only do these eyes attract mates, but they also scare away potential predators and act as camouflage. A mother-of-pearl crest is topped by a nicely-shaped turquoise addition. This approximately 1 1/2" long, 1" wide and 1 3/8" tall gorgeous bird has turquoise eyes.
