A rich line of Zuni artists descend from the late George Cheechee Haloo. He was an important innovator who started carving in the 1930's, known for his wonderful fetish necklaces. Today, Rosita Kaamasee carries on in the traditional art with collectible fetish necklaces honoring her family's legacy. She recently furnished us with a stunning, single strand fetish necklace consisting of many skillfully carved denim lapis birds and Bears, strung with lovely baby olive heishe beads. Specimens of lapis that have a lot of calcite in them are given the trade name denim lapis as they resemble wonderful faded denim. Each personality-plus creature has drilled eyes filled with jet paste, measuring about 3/4" to 1 1/4" long. The treasurable necklace is approximately 30" long.
