Sugilite was first noted in 1944 by Japanese petrologist Ken-Ichi Sugi from the Imperial University in Kyushu. He found sugilite on the Iwagi islet in the south west of Japan. The naming of sugilite was to honor him. This exquisite and unusual mineral was also found in the Wessels Mine in South Africa in 1979. The known reserves from this mine are spent. Sugilite has also been found in India, Italy, Australia and Canada. It surely makes for a drool-worthy ring by Jolene Eustace. The alluring purple hue and soft grooving of the stone make this ring a statement piece. Reticulated sterling silver and 18K gold ball embellishments add an additional richness. The sugilite itself is about 1 3/8" by 1 3/8" wide, while the layered band is approximately 1/2" wide. A signed by the artist ring that is a size 7 1/2.
