Bison were almost hunted to extinction by European colonizers. Indigenous tribes are at the forefront of bison recovery bringing them back to treaty lands. Now making a comeback, Bison help reverse damage to prairies. Built to keep moving, bison don't overdo their stay in one area. Instead natural behaviors like grazing patterns create nesting areas for birds. Their hooves aerate the soil for seeds to grow. As they wallow and roll around, they create depressions that fill with rain, serving as pools for amphibians, insects and are sources of drinking water for wildlife. Herbert Halate's nicely-sized buffalo is carved from bold jet and has turquoise inlaid eyes. A softly etched mane, head and beard have been lightly textured. About 4 5/8" long, 1 1/4" wide and 2 1/2" tall.
