The optical properties of abalone shell have bewitched humans throughout time. The revered shells played an important role in intertribal trade in the old days. The natural and magical iridescence is thanks to multiple layers of thin plates which contribute to the vibrant hues through a miracle known as multilayer interference. The combination of surface grooves and internal layers in the watery abalone shell allows for the directed scattering of light. Jovanna Poblano's carved bird necklace is loaded with lustrous changing colors thanks to the abalone specimens that compose this approximately 22" long work. The carved feathered friend is from the colorful shell artfully set with turquoise and red coral, surrounded by amazing beadwork from glass seed beads. Jovanna is well-known for her incredible beading. Branch red coral and turquoise fringe cascade below the bird. Including the silver bale and fringe, the bird pendant is itself about 3 1/4" long and 1 3/4" wide. Abalone shaped hearts and rectangles are interspersed with red coral and turquoise beads.
