Of special interest to Faye Quandelacy is the sculptural depiction of the three stages of womanhood: the Maiden, the Mother, and the Wise Elder Grandmother. In this piece Faye has positioned this maiden of picture jasper in the kneeling position, possibly patiently waiting to begin the traditional process of grinding corn on a rock metate. The lines of jasper are perfectly suited to the maidens shawl and adds to the incised designs across the surface. The maiden's hair is swept up into two buns and her overlaid turquoise face, accented with jet paste, is serene. The carving measures about 1 3/4" tall, 1" wide by 1 1/4" deep.
