In the 1980's a new and more realistic style of carving became popular. The Cheama brothers (Daniel Quam, Lance, Wilfred and Fabian) were considered the leaders of this new style. The time spent and careful attention to detail are evident in this Bison by Fabian Cheama. With fine incising he has created the long, thick, course hair of the head and front half of the body. His careful carving made the most out of the stone patterns to define the hind quarters. And even though this is a small carving (about 1 1/2" long, 1/2" wide by 1" tall) the facial detail and expression is remarkable. The eyes are inlaid turquoise. The pouch in the photo is not included but can be purchased separately here.
