Zuni Pueblo artist Maxx Laate is a master at carving extraordinary animals such as this approximate 4 1/4" tall, 1 5/8" wide and 2 1/2" deep oryx from antler with eyes of inlaid jet. Maxx used an interesting section of antler to bring this antelope to life and cut the bottom so the whole piece teeters gracefully secure. Oryx are a large antelope native to the Kalahari Desert in Africa. They were introduced to southern New Mexico, near  the White Sands Missile Range area in the mid-1960's, where they flourished and reside today.
