As the spring season's sunshine is warming the earth, an eager Snake is coaxed out of winter's hibernation. Andrew Quam carved this turquoise-eyed reptile from abalone with undulating patterns and bright orange colors. About 3 1/2" long, 5/8" wide and 3/8" tall.
Andrew is a wonderful carver from the greater Johnny Quam (d), Andrew Emerson Quam (d) and Bossie Quam (d) family of noted Zuni artists. Andrew's mother was Rosalia Quam (d) who learned the art from her step-father George Cheechee Haloo (d). She was well-known for stringing bird fetishes and also for her animal carvings. Rosalia and her husband Andrew Emerson Quam taught their children, including Andrew how to carve.
