Maxx Laate started carving in 1987 with a pocket knife. His brother Pernell Laate (d) helped him with ideas. Together they learned the art all the while giving thanks for the gift of carving from their ancestors. Back then Maxx said he'd look at magazines, wildlife postcards and books to get an idea of how an animal might act in its environment. Prior to carving, Maxx used to paint and carve katsinas. A darling jet-eyed Bear
has been carved from turquoise and etched for a warm furry coat. Its front paws are especially adorable. About 1" long, 1/4" wide and 7/8" tall.
