"Shibapu Emergence" Pendant Turquoise, Coral, and Abalone

By Isaiah Calabaza, Kewa (Santo Domingo)

This offering is sold.
Isaiah Calabaza's named his latest pendant "Shibapu Emergence." Shibapu also known as "Sipapu" is a Hopi word signifying where they emerged from the underworld. The word Sipapu is also used to indicate a small round hole sometimes found in the floor of ceremonial meeting places called "kivas". Isaiah has crafted this pendant by carefully overlaying pieces of apple coral, turquoise, and turquoise beads on abalone. He also placed a single white shell bead with a hole in it to allow airflow, representing Sipapu. This slightly convex one-of-a-kind pendant measures about  3 3/4" long, including a generous bale, and 1 3/4" wide. Signed by the artist.
